Review:
This just in. Mike Lewis can sing!
Following up the regional success of his 2003
Umbrellas is the Sun EP. The WNEPTV news anchor and singer/songwriter softly
delivers ten tracks of sensitive, sometimes country-tinged songs on his latest release One Teardrop Falls.
Though it was made in Nashville. the disc's country influences are more subtle than suffocating with the twang coming across most clearly on tracks like '"Trail or Tears" and "Still:' But more often the sound leans to adult contemporary, with the final product sounding like a modem marriage of Don William and Dan Fogelberg that fits Lewis' artistic direction very well.
Additional credit is due to collaborators such as experienced songwriter/performer Gene Cotton and talented producer Steve Gibson. Both give the record professional polish and crisp production value.
Many songs feature a quiet, acoustic arrangement that sets reflective, melancholy mood such as on the title track "Lovin' You" and "Why You're Gone:' One exception is the semi-euphoric "In My Hour Of Need" which moves and bounces around in pop fashion.
With his heartfelt, just-above a whisper vocals setting a calm, soothing tone, Lewis shows that his musical dabblings are much too solidly crafted. played and produced for the record to be considered a novelty.
